Happy Monday, millennials!
This week’s Millennial On A Mission is a marketing and public relations professional who has been inspired by the lack of representation in the media of young women entrepreneurs of color. To fill the void, she has created Empire Life Magazine, which is a digital media platform for and by the young entrepreneurial woman of color.
Ladies and gentlemen, meet Asia Horne.
Hailing from Flint, Michigan by way of Grand Rapids, Michigan, Asia graduated from Grand Valley State University in Allendale, Michigan with a bachelor’s degree in advertising public relations. Currently, she works as a marketing coordinator in healthcare manufacturing by day, and by night is the founder and Editor-in-Chief of Empire Life Magazine.
MOAM: What inspired you to pursue your choice of career? Who are some individuals you admire in and out of your field of work? What challenges have you faced in building your business/brand, and what have you learned from them?
AH: I was inspired by the void in representation in media of young female entrepreneurs of color. I was also inspired by my peers and their dynamic businesses and brands that were deserving of positive exposure and recognition. Some individuals that have inspired me are women such as Karen Civil, Jamilah Lemieux and Issa Rae as they have been modern day trailblazers in marketing, journalism and digital media. Challenges I’ve faced have been the norm for any startup: lack of resources, the constant battle to expand reach and the like. I’ve simply learned that you must remain a student of your craft in order to master it.
To Asia, a Millennial on a Mission is a young individual who is extremely passionate and devoted to making an impact. “How I remain true to my dreams is constantly reminding myself of my ‘why'”, Asia says. “And the ultimate goal of Empire Life: to cultivate sisterhood, encourage entrepreneurship and empowering women to build their empires.” Her one piece of advice would be to her millennial peers? Don’t doubt yourself. “You are your biggest fan and your biggest critic, always instill confidence in yourself and into your dreams. Remain humbled, disciplined and innovative and you’ll make it to where you want to be.”
